Grade 5 Math and Art - What Math Means to Me ideas

Hello Fifth Grade,

Here is a list to get your brains whirling about your art/math project...

  • The History of Mathematics (if you're a history buff, this is a topic for you!!)
  • Measurement in the Ancient World (for example, the Egyptians, the Greeks, etc...)
  • Computers and Their Mathematical Uses (got any free broken computer parts lying around?)
  • A Famous Mathematician (are you a good portrait artist?)
  • The Development of Numbers (this is linked to math in the ancient world)
  • Math and Architecture (there is a ton of info about the new World Trade Center on the Net)
  • Math and Nature (do you like to be outside??)
  • Fashion and Math (do you like to create your own clothes, designs, or jewelry?)
  • Math and Art (are you a museum buff?)
  • Math and Medicine (anyone in your family a doctor?)
  • Inventions (does the idea of creating something new interest you?)
  • Symmetry Patterns in Nature (you could certainly use items from your own back- or front-yard)
  • Geometry and the City (have you been to Manhattan recently?)
  • Math and Sports (do you participate in a team of some sort?)
Here are a list of occupations that deal with math.  Maybe one in this list is interesting to you:
  • Accountant
  • Pilot
  • Architect
  • Baseball player (or any sports player)
  • Astronomer (studies space)
  • Attorney (lawyer)
  • Banker
  • Cartographer (a map-maker)
  • Casino manager (do you know how to play poker?  You would certainly beat me!)
  • Computer programmer (how do you think all those apps work on your iPhone?)
  • Electrical engineer (wires, lights, even a light show at a Justin Bieber concert...)
  • Environmental planner (are you interested in a green planet?)
  • Financial planner (do you want to help others plan how to use their money?)
  • Fund raiser
  • Weatherman or woman
  • Professor of math (let me tell you, they are tough on their students!!)
  • Illustrator (how do you think those cool pictures end up in your favorite books?)
  • Technical Illustrator (how do you think icons on your computer end up there?)
Wow, that's an amazing list to choose from.  Good luck putting together your 75-word paragraph and materials for your art project.  I look forward to helping you every step of the way.
